02 — SADO, WHERE ART LIVES

On Sado, art lives
close to everyday life.

Behind every stage are people who perform, care for it and gather to enjoy it.
Exploring Sado’s arts is also a way to encounter the lives that have sustained them.

01 / Noh in everyday life

A village stage.
Generations of stories.

Sado is known as the island of Zeami’s exile, but Noh spread widely here during the Edo period. Performed as offerings at shrines, it became part of ordinary people’s lives. Sado’s official tourism guide describes more than 30 surviving Noh stages.

Look beyond the timber to the people who gathered, performed and watched here. With their stories in mind, even a quiet stage can feel different.

02 / Kodo: from Sado to the world

Keeping tradition alive
means creating anew.

Based on Sado, the taiko performing arts ensemble Kodo debuted at the Berlin Festival in 1981. Its work explores the possibilities of traditional music and performing arts, centred on taiko, as contemporary expression.

Tradition does not stand still. Knowing the setting in which this expression grows can add another dimension to the sound: a connection between the island and the wider world.

03 / Contemporary art and place

An artwork can change
how you see an island.

GALAXY SADO ART aims to go beyond viewing artworks. It seeks to connect the island’s performing traditions, historic buildings and local industries through art, encouraging encounters and cultural exchange.

After looking at a work, notice the building, landscape and everyday activity around it. Art may offer a different way to discover Sado.
